I’ll never forget Mrs Turner, who had a strong dislike for Chris Barker, who probably showed up for every third class and sat at the back of the room talking about anything but chemistry with his nearest classmate. Mrs Turner would be so aggravated, and she would go out of her way to ask Chris a really tough chemistry question. Chris would look up at her like he’d just crawled out of bed and simply stun her with the correct answer. I would look over at Dave Stewart and we looked at each other in bewilderment as neither of us knew that answer and we just couldn’t figure out how Chris did it. I doubt that Chris cracked the Chem 12 textbook all year. Dave and I would laugh as we could see how stunned and frustrated Mrs Turner was in her inability to stump Chris. Crazy times.
Yes … I will never forget Ms Turner. I had difficulty with Chemistry and would go in for help at lunch. She didn’t look too pleased and never took time to help me in a meaningful way. She wanted to read her Agatha Christie books and sip on her tea in her thermos every lunch hour. I managed to somehow get through Chemistry as I needed to get into Home Economics at U.B.C. She told me to never take Chemistry again and gave me a passing grade. I had to take Chemistry 100 and Chemistry 230 to get my Home Economics Degree. I guess I had to take some more Chemistry!
I had Ms Turner in Chem 11. It was the only class I struggled with and barely passed. I never seemed to get it right! I now find out it wasn’t just me. Remember the days of getting “Recommended” if you got a C+ or better (then no final exam)? Well I had to promise I would never take Chemistry she recommended me so I could pass the year. For that I have always been grateful.
